- Final Thoughts
Ordinary people with no medical conditions want to know their heart rate from time to time. I want to know my resting rate before getting on the treadmill and after I get off. The best pulse oximeters are trusted by those with CHF (congestive heart failure), COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and other serious medical conditions.
Normal Resting Heart Rate
For adults, the normal resting heart rate is from 60 to 100 beats per minute. In general, a lower resting heart rate indicates that the heart functions better cardiovascularly meaning better circulation and efficiency, being more fit and stable. A devoted and trained athlete can have a normal resting heart rate at 40 beats per minute a healthy place to be.
How to Check Your Heart Rate
I check my rate at the carotid artery at the side of my neck. You can calculate other ways too. Put you index finger and third finger at your front throat to the side of your windpipe or at your radial artery at the thumb side of your wrist. Put your fingers between the tendon and bone and you will feel the beat that feels like a thump. The easiest way to do it is using 15-seconds to count then multiply by four to equal 60-seconds or a minute for your beats per minute.
Factors That Effect Heart Rate
There are issues that can alter or affect heart rate numbers, and these can be your activity level, food, fitness, emotions, body size, medications, sitting or standing, and even the air temperature where you are.
Be sure to see your healthcare provider if your heart rate is constantly above 100 beats per minute, known as tachycardia, or if your heart rate is 60 beats or lower each minute known as bradycardia. If you feel faint, dizzy, or breathless, be sure to see your doctor.
Benefits Using Pulse Oximeters
Oximeters use a technology to measure the oxygen level in your blood as well as giving you your heart rate. The finger pulse oximeter detects any changes of the oxygen in your blood so that you can control any disorder you might have.
Why You Need an Oximeter
It’s vital to know your blood oxygen level. If it’s too low, that can cause other problems with respiratory and/or organ dysfunction.
The finger oximeter is easy to use by simply clipping it over your finger for an immediate blood oxygen readout by the built-in sensors. It will shine light through your finger and relay the oxygen level as a digital number on the screen with the oxygen percent. You will see your pulse rate as well.
The measurement is that of the hemoglobin—the protein in the blood that carries the oxygen. People without pulmonary (lung) issues, typically will have 95% to 99% oxygen levels.
A pulse oximeter lets crew members and passengers of an airplane evaluate their real need for supplemental oxygen quickly and easily. However, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has not yet given any official recommendations for the use of pulse oximetry in flight.
Choosing the Best Oximeter
When breathing room air at or near sea level, an estimate of arterial pO2 (oxygen) can be made from the blood-oxygen monitor saturation of peripheral oxygen (SpO2) reading so be sure your oximeter gives this data.
Pregnant mothers-to-be, babies, and children can use oximeters, but please read the instructions that might prevent this with the unit you buy. The reviews here are specific for adults.
Our best oximeter reviews are discussed below for you to have a better understanding of them and what will work best for you.

“Recently a team of doctors and scientists used six MTS® OX-610A devices on a research trip to Mt. Everest (Xtreme Everest). Their aim was to find out more about how blood oxygen levels change, from moment-to-moment, as they ascended from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp, where, at 17,000 feet (5300 m) above sea level, the amount of oxygen in the air is only half that at sea level. They wore the MTS® devices during the trek and sometimes overnight, to record heart rate and oxygen saturation continuously.”
Five different users can record their data on Windows® (MAC not supported). With this unit you can analyze your information. You will also have a long-term user trend report.
Perfusion Index (PI) can also be displayed with the MTS® OX-610A oximeter and the PI value provides information on the quality of blood circulation in the test area allowing the user to choose the best finger for testing.
